Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil explained that he is not calling for Bangsar South’s name to be reverted back to Kerinchi, but for the latter to be given importance, reported The Star.
“Bangsar South should not overshadow Kerinchi, which has its own heritage, history and identity.”
Fahmi said several things should be carried out to highlight the prior name. “Several changes in signage should be done, such as at the SMK Seri Pantai, where it should have its signboard changed to say it’s in Kerinchi instead of Bangsar South.”
“We will build arches announcing entry into Kerinchi, as well as conduct extensive research into the history of Kerinchi and publish the findings.”
Recently, Fahmi announced that the authorities plan to organise festivals to commemorate the area’s history.
“We will also do an arts and culture festival highlighting Kerinchi history, identity and more, called ‘Ini Kerinchi Lah!’,” he tweeted.
Fahmi, who had blasted Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for changing Kerinchi’s name to Bangsar South in 2008 without proper consultation, said name changes should be treated seriously and DBKL should not approve name changes with following proper procedure.
“I have talked to the Persatuan Waris Kerinchi Kuala Lumpur (PWKKL), DBKL, people who studied history of the place, as well as various stakeholders, and they agreed.”
“The people there are also happy with this solution,” he said, adding that he intends to submit the aforementioned proposals to Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz.
Situated along the Federal Highway, Bangsar South is a mixed-use project constructed on what was formerly known as Kampung Kerinchi.
