TTDI Longhouse Residents Divided Over Resettlement Plans

13 Aug 2018

Views on the resettlement plans for Bukit Kiara longhouse residents have been mixed – with some in favour of the proposed high-rise residential development in Taman Rimba Kiara and Taman Tun Dr Ismail while some were against it, reported The Star.

The difference in opinion led to the formation of two resident associations (RA) – Bukit Kiara Rumah Panjang RA (BKRPRA) and Pertubuhan Penduduk Perumahan Awam Bukit Kiara.

BKRPRA is mostly comprised of the longhouse community’s younger generation, the rest of the residents were represented by the latter.

The proposed project included eight blocks of 42- to 54-storey luxury serviced apartments as well as a 29-storey affordable housing block with 350 units for the relocation of TTDI longhouse residents.

In protesting the project, TTDI residents filed an application for judicial review with the High Court, in which they sought to annul the conditional planning permission and development order handed out by DBKL last year.

They also formed a volunteer technical group which came up with a permanent and sustainable townhouse that could be built at a RM15 million cost.

To be developed at a 1.86ha site, the alternative plan comprises 200 townhouses and is supported by BKRPRA.

“It will also not affect the park and we believe this is the best way to preserve the community,” said BKRPRA secretary Sivakumar Muniandy.

Meanwhile, Pertubuhan Penduduk Perumahan Awam Bukit Kiara wants the resettlement agreement they signed with Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan to push through.

Under this resettlement plan, the original family will be given a housing unit for free, while second generation families can get a similar unit for RM175,000.

“We have been living here for 36 years and we have had enough,” said Pertubuhan Penduduk Perumahan Awam Bukit Kiara chairman V.Sunderam. “We do not want to relocate anymore and the affordable units will be built behind the temple.”

He noted that minor repair works were being done following the signing of the agreement, but everything was halted when the case was filed in court.
