Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani revealed that Putrajaya has opted to build less expensive homes under the PR1MA housing programme after reviewing the current scheme.
He stated this after the unveiling of Maybank Islamic’s rent-to-own housing scheme known as Houzkey on Thursday (23 November). However, he did not confirm if there would be more changes to the PR1MA housing programme, which presently offers dwellings costing up to RM400,000.
Recently, Johari said that the additional RM1.5 billion funding under Budget 2018 for PR1MA Corporation to construct 210,000 residential properties costing less than RM250,000 is an admission that some PR1MA units are unaffordable.
Notably, PR1MA Corp’s main objective is to build low-cost dwellings for the country’s middle 40 percent income earners (M40 group). Although it constructs houses priced between RM100,000 and RM400,000, some units at one of its latest projects, PR1MA @ Jalan Jubilee, contained units costing more than the upper limit.
In fact, the biggest flat in project measuring 1,089 sq ft is selling for RM445,000. However, it is currently unknown if PR1MA Corporation will only focus on building residential properties costing RM250,000 and below.
