The state government of Sabah is considering to build 500 flats under the People’s Housing Project (PPR) to provide shelter for fishermen in Tawau whose homes caught fire on Saturday (1 July), reported the Daily Express.
“This proposal is a long-term solution to what we think can assist fire victims at Kg Hidayat Laut, Mile 4, Jalan Apas,” said State Assembly Speaker Datuk Syed Abbas Syed Ali, who visited the affected residents.
However, he revealed that the development’s location is still being finalised.
“The project will take four to five years to complete like the PPR Taman Batu Sapi project (180 units) at Lupas Meluas in Sandakan for fishermen whose houses were burned,” noted Syed Abbas.
The fire that occurred at 3pm last Saturday razed about 250 houses of nearly 2,000 individuals. Thankfully, no one was killed.
Meanwhile, the short-term aid for the victims like rebuilding the bridge linking the homes on the water is targeted to be ready in two to three months.
After this, the authorities plan to distribute plywood and zinc roofing to help the residents rebuild their former residences, noted Syed Abbas who is the Assemblyman for Balung.
Furthermore, Tawau Member of Parliament Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching pledged that they will provide additional emergency donations in the near future.
“We have yet to decide (amount) but it will certainly be a reasonable amount… we will have further discussion with Balung and Apas representatives regarding the assistance,” added Yap, who distributed 100 boxes of mineral water given by the Tawau Parliament.
