Bukit Jalil National Stadium Bags 2018 Stadium of the Year Award

Pavither 7 Jun 2018

Bukit Jalil’s fame rose when the National Sports Complex was built for the Commonwealth Games in 1998. Since then, the township grew into becoming one of the most sought after residential areas in Kuala Lumpur for its thriving communities and amenities it had to offer.

However, over time, the National Sports Complex’s condition deteriorated and required refurbishing.

Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd’s (MRCB) rejuvenation of the Bukit Jalil National Sports Complex has paid off, after the refurbished sports complex and the Bukit Jalil National Stadium bagged two coveted international awards, reported The Star.

The Bukit Jalil National Stadium which is nestled within the KL Sports City was hailed the 2018 Stadium of the Year at the World Stadium Congress Awards held in Amsterdam.

Bukit Jalil National Stadium beat three other contenders from France, namely New Bordeaux Stadium, Stade de France and U-Arena Stadium.

In rejuvenating the sports complex – which included four stadiums – MRCB worked together with Populous as contractor and architect, respectively.

During the redesigning process, focus was given on delivering functional excellence that is of international standard by integrating innovative and modern architecture with elements of sustainability.

The clever use of parametric technology for KL Sports City’s façade lighting demonstrates the project’s success in combining environmentally-friendly technology and state-of-the-art design.

In fact, the project has previously received various significant accolades, such as the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) 5 Star Shassic Award as well as the Gold Award at the 13th Moshpa Excellence Awards for OSHE Management in Engineering and Construction.

Last year, KL Sports City was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2017 World Architecture Festival Awards in Berlin.
