FT Minister: We Will Not Allow Taman Rimba Kiara To Be Destroyed By High-Rise Project

9 Aug 2018

Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad said Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan’s (YWP) controversial project in Taman Rimba Kiara will not be allowed to proceed if it will encroach on the green lung, reported The Malaysian Insight.

“I have already informed YWP to relook the proposed plan. If it takes up a portion of the park, definitely I will not allow it.”

“But if it is an issue where further clarification is needed, then I would have to wait for it (first),” he said, adding that they will review the agreement for the project.

The contentious high-rise development consists of a 29-storey affordable housing block with 350 units intended for longhouse residents as well as six blocks of 42- and 52-storey luxury serviced apartments with 1,766 units. Overall, 2,116 homes will be built, increasing the area’s population density from 74 persons per acre to 979 persons per acre.

Previously, residents of Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) sought a judicial review against DBKL in August 2017 to invalidate the planning permission and development order (DO) granted for the project.

During a meeting with TTDI residents, Khalid said the those living near Taman Rimba Kiara are unhappy over the aforementioned development as it will encroach on the park.

Meanwhile, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh is glad that the Khalid Samad agreed to meet with four representatives from TTDI’s Residents Association to discuss the project.

“It was good for the FT Minister to hear why Taman Rimba Kiara is so important to the community,” said Yeoh on a Facebook post.

Previously, Yeoh submitted a complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against Adnan Tengku Mansor over the project and the investigation is still ongoing.

Notably, the controversial development was approved during the term of former Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, whose ministry controls DBKL. He was also member of YWP’s board of trustees.
