Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB) will reportedly refurbish various sports facilities at Bukit Jalil’s National Sports Complex (NSC), including the Bukit Jalil Stadium, which serves as the country’s main venue for sporting events.
According to sources, the refurbishment work may cost up to RM1 billion and in return, MRCB will receive parcels of land for development within the vicinity of the NSC should the proposal be approved.
Aside from refurbishing the facilities, the job also include building a sports museum as well as a hall of fame.
“MRCB has submitted the proposal to the Youth and Sports Ministry and is awaiting the results. It is for the refurbishment of a few stadiums,” revealed a source.
Buildings within the NSC include the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil National Stadium, National Aquatic Centre, National Squash Centre and National Hockey Stadium.
The facilities, which were built in the 1990s by the UEM-Renong group for the Commonwealth Games in 1998, have not witnessed much refurbished since then.
Sources noted that the development of the land surrounding NSC will be done after the completion of the refurbishment works.
“The land MRCB would get in return for the refurbishment and building of new infrastructure would depend on the cost of the job. That will be the next phase of the project,” shared the source.
Meanwhile, a Youth and Sports Ministry spokesperson confirmed that plans to refurbish Bukit Jalil’s stadiums are in the pipeline. However, the spokesperson declined to comment if the stadiums to be refurbished will be limited to those within the NSC only.
“We will reveal more information very soon,” said the spokesperson.
