Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng backtracked from his statement that construction players employing foreign workers need only pay 20 percent of the RM10,000 levy for each worker’s extended stay saying that employers would still have to bear the entire levy, reported The Edge.
The ministry decided to revert back to its original policy after a local Chinese daily reported that foreign workers considered the new policy – which required them to pay the remaining 80 percent levy – a burden to them, said Lim.
It has to be noted that the minister had on Monday (24 September) announced that the levy payable by construction players for the extended stay of their foreign workers have been reduced from 100 percent to 20 percent.
Foreign workers who have worked for more than 10 years here can reportedly stay for an extended period of up to three years.
Lim noted that the levy will see the government collecting around RM1 billion in revenue for three years.
