After causing much confusion over his ban on foreign buyers at Forest City project, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad confirmed that Chinese nationals are allowed to acquire residential units at the multi-billion ringgit project in Johor, but no residential visas would be issued to them, reported The Star.
“They can buy the property, but we would not give them visas to come and live here,” he said at the National Art Gallery’s 60th-anniversary ceremony.
Last week, Dr Mahathir announced that foreigners would be barred from purchasing units at Forest City.
A day after, however, the Prime Minister’s Officer clarified that the acquisition of residential properties does not guarantee the buyer automatic residency in Malaysia.
This comes as there are certain “conditions and information” imposed on foreigners buying properties in Malaysia, irrespective of their nationality, it said.
Johor state government’s Mentri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian also said that the state “does not discriminate or segregate foreign investors or property buyers according to regions or countries of origin”.
Nonetheless, buyers are subject to rules and regulations when acquiring homes within Johor, including in Iskandar Malaysia’s economic growth corridor.
“The policies are already in place and clearly indicate they are only allowed to buy houses priced RM1 million or above,” said Osman.
