Refurbished Playground In Taman Seri Kota Taken Away In Less Than A Month

6 Sept 2018

Less than a month after its upgrade, the 0.3ha playground along Jalan Seri Kota 2 was fenced up by a developer and is now overgrown with grass – to the ire of residents in Taman Seri Kota, Sungai Chua.

The residents raised their concern to Balakong by-election MCA candidate, Tan Chee Teong.

They claimed that they were not informed that the land’s status had been changed, reported The Star.

“We were told that the transaction was done in 2014. There was no signboard put up to inform residents nearby,” said Wong Yew Fai.

A resident at the Seri Kota housing area for almost 10 years, Wong revealed that the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) completed refurbishment works at the playground at end-January this year.

By mid-February, however, the property was fenced up by a developer, with the equipment cleared away.

With this, residents submitted a letter to MPKj’s Urban Planning Department to clarify the matter in April.

“We went personally to the council to find out the status of the land. It was only then that they showed us an official letter to the developer from the council.”

The letter showed that the council had given planning approval for the land way back in December 2014. Based on the letter, the developer was also required to provide a replacement open space prior to starting any work.

Tan wondered how planning approval for the land was given, considering that it had been used as a recreational space for more than 20 years.

“How can the status of the land be changed, and is the area suitable for a condominium?” he asked, while adding that the nearby residents should have been consulted.

“What are the guidelines? How can you deprive residents of a recreational area.”
